The fact that 1.25 million people suffer from type 1 diabetes only in the USA is devastating. When it comes to reversing this disease, it turned out that there is a vaccine which was used more than 100 years ago for tuberculosis (bacillus Calmette-Guerin).
Nowadays, this vaccine is used by medical experts and doctors for treating bladder cancer. That gives the conclusion that this vaccine is safe for your health.
At the 75th Scientific Sessions of American Diabetes Association it was announced that the Food and Drugs Administration will test this vaccine on 150 people. All of the participants will have an advanced stage of type 1 diabetes.
The body of a person who suffers from type 1 diabetes is not able to produce insulin because the immune system is destroying the cells that create this hormone.
In the pancreatic islets, where the insulin is being produced, many problems may occur due to the T cells which are produced by the body. These T cells are actually eliminated with this incredible vaccine.
An increase in the levels of a substance called tumor necrosis factor was noticed in people who suffer from diabetes and who have been injected with the vaccine.
The T cells which obstruct the process of insulin production are annihilated by the increased level of TNF in the system.
The participants who suffered from type 1 diabetes were injected with the tuberculosis vaccine twice in a month in an experiment that dates from way back.
The results from this experiment were shocking. The dangerous T cells were eliminated and in some of the participants the insulin started secreting on its own.
The director of the Massachusetts General Hospital Immunobiology Laboratory in Boston, Dr. Denise Faustman, was especially thrilled by the results of the BCG vaccine.
Dr. Denise said that in the preliminary phase of the trial they have received a statistically considerable response to BCG. However, they aim to create a lasting therapeutic response.
She states that they are going to conduct a study that will include people who have had type 1 diabetes for a longer period of time.
This trial is not a means of prevention. It is supposed to create a regimen that will be able to treat diseases which are in an advanced state.
There will be a new trial which will be similar as this one. The patients, who will be at the age between 18 and 60, will be injected with this vaccine twice in a month. Then, they will reduce the injections of the vaccine to once a year for a four-year time span.
According to previous research results, the Diabetes Care journal published that in children with diabetes at the age between 5 and 18 the effects of Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) are not as efficient.
That happens because the BCG vaccine does not keep the beta-cell function or increase the remission rate. However, more research needs to be done if we want to improve the use of the BCG vaccine. This vaccine gives us hope!
