If you are dealing with recurring sinus infections, you are probably resistant to antibiotics. This is a rather serious conditions, since most people (doctors as well) believe that antibiotics are the only remedy for sinusitis. What you probably do not know is that Ayurveda has the best solution to your health problem.
It is believed that sinusitis and its most common painful symptoms such as post-nasal drip, inflammation and sinus headache, are caused by viruses, bacteria, or fungi. Sometimes these symptoms are nothing more than a simple allergic reaction to dust, pollen, air pollution and other irritants.
Keep in mind that this is the aspect of conventional medicine. Ayurveda, on the other hand, explains that different contributing factors affect different people, and this depends largely on one’s doshas, which represent body’s governing principles.
For instance, excessive drafts trigger the development of infections, and throws the blame on cold, dry, moving vatadosha, which regulates the circulatory system in the body. Sometimes the real cause lies within the liver. Alcoholic drinks and other liver irritants or allergic reactions to dust and pollen may be the real cause.
According to Ayurveda, these are associated with pitta dosha, which regulated both metabolism and inflammation. Some experts believe that dampness, overeating, heavy dinner, cold drinks, ice cream and ‘rich’ desserts affect the balance of kapha, the lubricating dosha, and eventually lead to sinusitis.
Regardless of the real cause, sinus infections respond to measures that maintain the balance of kapha, because it regulates the amount of mucus and fluids in the sinus cavities. Foods and habits with the opposite effect can balance a heavy, cold, slow and sticky kapha.
Consider light diet regimen that includes warm, cooked, easily digestible foods like steam-cooked veggies, non-creamy veggie soup, cooked whole grain dishes, and cooked fruits.
Remember, alcohol, red meat, and cold/iced foods and drinks are not your best friends. The same applies to curdled foods like cheese and yogurt, including both dairy and non-dairy products. Sipping hot drinks like herbal tea throughout the day may help in cases of congestion and pressure.
Try inhaling the vapors of freshly boiled water for 5-10 minutes. Do this twice a day. A few drops of eucalyptus essential oil will sure clear the nasal passages. However, make sure you close your eyes, otherwise the aromatic steam may cause a stinging sensation.
Poor immunity support sure plays a major role in the frequency of your sinus infections. Weak immune system and improper digestion almost always hold hands. Rich and heavy meals overload the digestive tract and stimulate the creation of ama, a sort of sticky toxin. Eventually, excess ama reaches weak parts of the body – in this case it is the sinuses – and impedes their normal function and cause a disease.
Detoxification is the first step towards a strong immunity. One of the easiest ways to achieve that is sipping hot spring water throughout the day. Handle your sinus attacks with our amazing ama-busting tea.
Steep two slices of fresh ginger, four mint leaves, two cloves, and a teaspoon of marshmallow root (Althaeaofficinalis) in two quarts of boiled water. Make your tea in the morning, and take small sips throughout the day. Use a thermos to keep your tea warm.
You can also use the help of turmeric, ginger, cumin, coriander, fennel, black pepper and other spices that enhance digestion and boost immunity. These promote healthy mucus drainage, and thus clear up sinuses.
