Frankincense has a long tradition of use, and its medicinal properties have been recorded since the ancient times.
It has been commonly involved in the religious ceremonies in the Middle-East, it has been a popular ingredient in the cosmetics of the ancient Egyptians and Anglo-Saxons, and it is believed to be one of the three gifts offered to the baby Jesus.
Nowadays, numerous aromatherapists and natural health practitioners use the amazing essential oil of the fragrant resin from the Boswellia Carteri tree.
This powerful oil strengthens immunity, enhances oral and mental health, prevents premature aging, and treats inflammation and infections.
However, the most impressive fact about this oil is that it has been recently shown to be an extremely potent cancer-fighter.
What’s more, studies have shown that it is even more effective than chemo, and does not have any side-effects, as it has a selective action, and kills only cancer cells, and does not destroy the healthy ones. Also, it has been shown that it can effectively kill chemotherapy-resistant cancer cells.
The team of researchers at the Leicester University discovered that the resin contains a powerful chemical compound, known as acetyl-11-keto-beta-boswellic acid (AKBA), which kills cancer cells at a realistic concentration.
They claim that it can provide excellent effects in the case of colon, prostate, ovarian, and breast cancer.
Their research has shown that AKBA gives positive effects in the treatment of last- stage ovarian cancer which is extremely difficult to treat.
Kamla Al-Salmani, a Ph.D. student from the University’s Department of Cancer Studies and Molecular Medicine said :“After a year of studying the AKBA compound with ovarian cancer cell lines in vitro, we have been able to show it is effective at killing cancer cells. Frankincense is taken by many people with no known side effects.
This finding has enormous potential to be taken to a clinical trial in the future and developed into an additional treatment for ovarian cancer.”
Their findings also indicate that this potent oil can destroy cancer cells that don’t respond to chemotherapy. Even though this requires more research, its use in the fight against cancer is very promising.
Furthermore, Dr. Mark Evans, Kamla’s Ph.D. Supervisor and Lecturer in the University’s Department of Cancer Studies and Molecular Medicine commented: “We have shown that this frankincense compound is effective at killing ovarian cancer cells at realistic concentrations.
What has been most surprising is that the cells we have tested which are resistant to chemotherapy have shown to be more sensitive to this compound, suggesting frankincense may indeed be able to help overcome drug resistance and lead to an improved survival rate for patients with late-stage ovarian cancer.”
How to use frankincense essential oil?
You can add the frankincense essential oil to your creams or natural lotions for topical use, or you can also dilute it with a carrier oil like coconut or jojoba oil. To treat respiratory issues and create a relaxing, peaceful, and calm atmosphere in the home, add it to a vaporizer or diffuser.
This oil has no side-effects, but due to its astringent and emmenagogue (menstruation promoting) properties, you should avoid the use of frankincense oil in the case of pregnancy.
