Get Rid of the Annoying Fruit Flies with these 5 Incredible Homemade Traps

We all know how annoying fruit flies can be. The worst thing is their ability to reproduce at a ridiculously fast rate since they have a crazy short life span, going from egg to adulthood in 8-10 days.

They can be mostly found in sink/garbage disposal drains since they thrive in moist, damp places. Fruit flies consume fruits and other foods that are fermenting or rotting.

Try these 5 incredible homemade fruit fly traps if you want to get rid of the nasty little buggers. With a little bit of effort you can make your home cleaner and remove these annoying insects.

  1. Apple Cider Vinegar

When you notice fruit flies in your home, do not panic because we have the perfect solution for you. And you guessed what that is, apple cider vinegar of course.

Apple cider vinegar is the dream drink to the fruit flies since cannot resist the smell of fermentation and we all know that apple cider vinegar comes from fermented apples. In order to release more of its irresistible fragrance, heat the apple cider vinegar.

You are going to need:

  • A mason jar or something similar
  • A funnel which you are also able to make it yourself
  • About ½ cup of apple cider vinegar
  • One drop of dish soap
  • A piece of ripe or overripe fruit (optional)

The first thing you need to do is to heat up half cup of apple cider vinegar and put it in the jar. You need to have a jar that is deep enough so the flies can drown. In order to break the surface tension of the liquid so the flies cannot just sit on the top and fly away when they are done, add one or two drops of dish soap.

In order to form a makeshift funnel, roll up a piece of paper and place it in the mouth of the jar. Tape it in order to stay in place. You created a death trap for the fruit flies. When they get into the jar to get the apple cider vinegar, they will drown since they will not be able to figure out how to get out.

Drop in a ripe piece of fruit and let it breakdown if you find you need a little extra temptation. Place the jar in the freezer for 20 minutes if the fruit flies do not drown. If you want to reuse the trap, you will not have to remove the old content. I remove the old content since I find the sight terribly unappealing.

  1. Jar-Type Trap with Fruit

You can notice by their name that fruit flies love fruit so the logical thing to do is to lure them with fruit.

You are going to need:

  • A glass jar
  • Plastic wrap
  • A toothpick
  • Some very ripe or overripe produce
  • Soapy water

In the bottom of the jar you need to put several pieces of very ripe or almost rotting fruit. Then, cover the jar with plastic wrap. Secure the jar well with a rubber band. Using a toothpick, poke some holes in the plastic wrap.

Place these jars all over your house, in places where you notice fruit flies. On a warm sunny day you need to set one outside the doorway. Now, you have your death trap. The fruit flies will not know how to get out so they will drown.

Submerge the jar in a bucket of warm soapy water and let it be for 10 minutes. You have to do this process in order to ensure that the flies do not come back. Rinse out, refill and repeat!

  1. Merry Fly Trap

Even though this is a little bit strange but fruit flies can get intoxicated just as people can. Fruit flies are drawn to red wine.

If you make this death trap, you will kill and remove them from your home. You are also able to use the freezer or soapy water technique to ensure that they are dead.

You are going to need:

  • A little bit of leftover red wine (you can also use red wine vinegar or balsamic in a pinch)

The first thing you need to do is to leave a little bit of red wine at the bottom of the bottle. Let it stay like that for some time. Since the fruit flies are drawn to red wine, they will flock to it and die a very merry death.

If you want, you can put it in a separate container with plastic wrap but you need to poke holes in the top. Now your house can be fruit fly-free.
